$328 in nine trips on a Monday, my friends. Not luck, a system. Here are the five moves from that day, documented ride by ride.
Ride the waves. The money comes in windows: roughly 7 to 10 in the morning and 3:30 to 6:30 in the evening. I made $75 fast in the morning wave, worked on my business during the dead middle, then pulled $175 in the afternoon wave. Between waves, do not burn gas chasing scraps, park somewhere useful and build something.
Read the receipt like a poker hand. After every ride, study what the passenger paid versus what you got. When Uber’s insurance charge and service fee are roughly EQUAL on the receipt, a tip usually shows up. When the service fee is tiny, do not hold your breath. This one pattern tells you which conversations were worth it.
Never say no, negotiate instead. Two businessmen asked me to wait 30 minutes while they ate lunch. Uber does not pay for waiting, so I said: I have to end the ride here, can you take care of me? They said absolutely, then invited me to eat WITH them. Great lunch, great conversation, my business card on the table, and a $60 cash tip. We are independent contractors, act like one.
Position yourself where the money lives. At lunchtime I drove AWAY from the crowded zone to Dana Point, wealthy area, few drivers, and caught a $28 Uber Eats delivery for a four-mile Carl’s Jr run, on which Uber actually LOST $18. Later, near 4 PM with traffic everywhere and drivers thinning out, I let two junk offers clear the other drivers off the board, and the $101 ride (79 miles, business Comfort) landed in my lap. Right place, right time, patient.
Build the exit while you drive. That same day I showed my business card and website: airport transfers, corporate travel, a booking form, and four ways to take payment (Square, Zelle, Cash App, Venmo). Every great passenger gets a card. You become your own app: you quote the price, you take the payment, you keep 100%. That is the whole game.
